Djibouti launches regional submarine cable system

Djibouti has concluded a deal for the construction and maintenance of a regional submarine cable system, Djibouti Telecom said.
The agreement for the Djibouti-Africa Regional Express (DARE) was signed over the weekend with seven telecom service providers from the Horn and East Africa and the Middle East.
The DARE, spanning approximately 5,500km, will connect Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, Mogadishu, Bossaso, Berbera, Mocha and Djibouti. The system will provide an alternative route to the Horn and East Africa.
The total cost
The project is expected to be completed by May 2018, according to the statement from the Djibouti Telecom, which did not mention the total cost of the undertaking.
TE SubCom, an industry pioneer in undersea communications technology, has been awarded the supplier contract for the DARE, which will provide additional protection and diversity to existing heavily congested undersea cable systems.
The seven major carriers that make up the DARE consortium are Djibouti Telecom, Africa Marine Express, TeleYemen, Telesom Company, Hormuud Telecom Somalia Inc., Golis Telecom, and Somtel Group.
The 100G cable system will deliver more than 60 Terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity.
DARE will stimulate exponential business growth in participating countries by providing robust, reliable and lowest latency connectivity, according to the Djibouti Telecom statement.
“Additionally, the diversified Points of Presence (PoP) and future connectivity options in Djibouti, Yemen, Kenya, and Tanzania, will provide vital flexibility for the consortium carriers and their customers,” it said.
